Thomas A. Kube

Tom Kube is the Executive Director of Kube & Company, Higher Education Management Consultants, an industry recognized consulting practice specializing in executive search, mergers and acquisitions, operational consulting and organizational effectiveness in the for-profit sector of higher education. (www.kubeco.com). He previously served as the CEO of the Aging Life Care Association (ALCA) a national professional association dedicated to geriatric care managers; including its affiliated certification body the National Academy of Certified Care Managers (NACCM). He was Executive Director/CEO for The Council of Educational Facility Planners (CEFPI). Prior to this, Mr. Kube served as the Executive Director/CEO of the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). He also served as the Manager of Corporate Strategic Planning for the American Automobile Association (AAA). In all, he has held leadership and operating positions in business and education for nearly 40 years.

Mr. Kube is a nationally recognized expert in accreditation and distance education. He has served as a Commissioner for the Distance Education and Training Council (DETC).

Among his accomplishments are: In 2006, advising the White House on Safe and Secure Learning Environments at the request of the U.S. Attorney General and the U.S. Secretary of Education. Administering national research programs on educational outcomes and the factors that influence student success, starting the first Small Business Development Center in Virginia at George Mason University and helping refine and apply the complex regulations and sweeping changes imposed by the 1992 and 1997 Reauthorizations of the Higher Education Act. He was also intricately involved in the planning and execution of the President William Jefferson Clinton's first National Symposium on School Design in 1998.

Mr. Kube served as a member of the U.S Secretary of Education’s Financial Ratio Task Force as part of the 1997 Reauthorization of the Higher Education Act, and has testified before the U.S. Congress on educational research and for-profit education. Mr. Kube is the author of numerous published articles and editorials, and has written for such publications as the School Planning & Management, School Construction News, The San Diego Business Journal, College Bound, Transworld Education, and Techniques magazine.

Space Planning Guidelines for Institutions of Higher Education

These space-planning guidelines are intended to be used in the determination of the amount of nonresidential space that may be needed by an institution on its main campus to meet current or projected needs. Served as project manager and editor.

Creating Connections: The CEFPI Guide for Educational Facility Planning 

The Guide focuses on the various aspects of progressive school planning and the importance of creating connections among all the constituents that are necessary to the planning process. Served as editor throughout the development of the content, as well as publishing the final product. 

Advanced Certificate Program in Educational Facility Planning

In collaboration with San Diego State University, developed a six-course master’s level certification program in educational facility planning that is currently available for open enrollment. This program is fully electronic and can be accessed any where/any time. Each two-credit course is eight weeks in length and instructors are internationally recognized subject matter experts. The program serves industry professionals as a core body of knowledge that will lead to certification in educational facility planning. Continues to provide leadership in management of the on-going delivery and international marketing and student recruitment. Served as co-director of the project from conception to implementation.

An Appraisal Guide for Older/Historic School Facilities

This guide is a tool to evaluate the physical condition and educational adequacy of older and historic school facilities. This appraisal system is intended only as a preliminary assessment to begin a conversation about the meaning and value of a district's older and historic schools. Served as project manager, co-author and editor of publication.

Healthy, High Performing School Facilities: An informational video

This 6-minute video is a segment of Spotlight On, a Public Broadcasting Service filler program for stations nation-wide. The program describes components of high performing school facilities and illustrates the concepts on location of a school that has been deemed "healthy" by the US EPA.

Educational Facility Planner (EFP)

The Educational Facility Planner is a trade journal, which publishes articles concerning the latest in school building research and ’hot topics.’ Served as editor.

A Primer for the Renovation/Rehabilitation of Older/Historic School Facilities

The Primer discusses the various factors, which have served as barriers to the rehabilitation of these schools. Case studies are used to illustrate ways communities across the United States and Canada have successfully renovated older and historic schools to save both valuable community assets and construction dollars. Co-author and editor of publication.

Schools for Successful Communities: An Element of Smart Growth

This publication explains why and how communities should employ smart growth planning principles to build schools that better serve and support students, staff, parents, and the entire community. Served as project manager and co-author and editor of final publication.
